Halloween Hangout

Can you imagine a world without Halloween? Well, until I was about 12, I had no idea what this mystical “holiday” was…actually I had no idea it even existed. See, I was born and raised in a different country (can you guess which one?) and when my family and I came to the States, no one bothered to inform us. Until….one day we noticed all of these spooky decorations going up in windows and yards, candy bags filling the store isles and creepy holes in mutilated pumpkins glowing red at night time, all in preparation for this glorious celebration of gluttony and costumed madness. Oh, and here I thought it was all just for my birthday…which IS on October 31st. I am delighted to have missed only 12 Halloweens in my life and am determined to make up for every single one of them by going all out for Halloween-whether it be ridiculous costumes (you should see my ever growing collection) or fabulous parties…or both.

I bet other adults out there love Halloween as much as I do and I firmly believe that this fest isn’t just for the kiddos. This year, I have decided to have a Halloween hang at my house; complete with watching badly made horror movies (which me and my guests will mock a la Mystery Science Theater 3000), home-made costumes and deliciously crafted snacks and cocktails.

If you decide to DIY [your] Halloween party this year, here are a few snack and cocktail ideas for the big kids, while the little ones count their sugary loot:

Decorations of Doom

  • You can buy so much fun stuff at the various craft stores to adorn your space, but you can also make a bunch: Saw or cut off the top 1/4 of the largest pumpkin you can find (and carry) and scoop out the innards. Fill with beverages of choice and cover with ice. For an added effect, drop a tiny piece of dry ice into the cooler.
  • For a sinister centerpiece, just spray-paint a few short branches with black paint and insert into a clear vase filled with candy corn or orange jelly beans. Eerie+edible=excellent!!
  • Spooky Snax

  • You can make all kinds of eye-balls and brains, “bloody” (ketchup-y) and “slimy” (Halloween-green) nibbles! Be creative with the colors in your refrigerator!
  • Try representing the unmistakable color palette of orange and black on your grub buffet by choosing sexy dark fruits and bright orange cheeses.
  • Creepy Cocktails

  • Light it on fire, add a little green or red coloring or simply place some Halloween candy at the bottom of your jigger and voila, you’ve got yourself a naughty looking drink. OR!! You can try my  twist on a White Russian. I place ice-cream “eyeballs” at the bottom of a glass and cover with black or coffee-flavored vodka. Add a splash of Cola if you wish and you’ve got yourself and adult float.
  • If you ask me, the top 3 most important details of a get-together are the setting (or theme/decor), food and drink…everything else is optional…or at least negotiable..

    Happy Halloween Everybody!
