Virginia Davis, Kitchen Mistress

Virginia DavisWhen I was a little girl, I was fascinated with how effortlessly my  mom and grandmother cooked everything. Having grown up in Russia in the 70s and 80s, there wasn’t much to work with in terms of ingredients and I remember aisles and aisles of grocery store shelves filled with nothing but mayonnaise-like a bad movie. Yet somehow we always ate

well, although the real joy for cooking only seemed apparent during the holidays, when we somehow got our hands on “fancy” ingredients, like prunes and smoked fish. I think the lack of delights made it impossible not to improvise and so we did. My mom worked magic with what what we could cook with and man, could my grandma put on a banquet! I watched…not sure what I was learning yet, but years later (and several miles across the ocean), when I found out I too had a knack for creative ways around the kitchen, I fully dove into the foodie world with this ingrained, intuitive wisdom.

And so my culinary journey has taken me from my test kitchen (also known as my first apartment in college) to various restaurants, cafes, home kitchens and competitions, where I matured as a cook. Paying my way through college, I only worked in places I could eat, cook and learn. When I decided a career in politics wasn’t for me I traveled west to Colorado to seek culinary gold. After cooking for several local establishments and eventually managing the cafe that my parents bought as an investment, I decided that I want more. Way more!

The Kitchen Mistress was born on a cold, rainy day in March, 2008. I was sitting around and pondering how I can inspire and empower people to love their meals. Perhaps preparing the meals for them as their personal chef was just one aspect. I am

striving to encourage people to be mindful of the cooking process, to know where their food comes from and to have fun in the kitchen. Can all this be accomplished? I certainly hope so and that is why I am here to share what I know and see, smell and taste.

Please Enjoy-Na Zdorovye!
